Uniform refraction in negative refractive index materials.

We study the problem of constructing an optical surface separating two homogeneous, isotropic media, one of which has a negative refractive index. In doing so, we develop a vector form of Snell's law, which is used to study surfaces possessing a certain uniform refraction property, in both the near- and far-field cases. In the near-field problem, unlike the case when both materials have positiv...

Perfect imaging without negative refraction

Perfect imaging has been believed to rely on negative refraction, but here we show that an ordinary positively–refracting optical medium may form perfect images as well. In particular, we establish a mathematical proof that Maxwell’s fish eye in two–dimensional integrated optics makes a perfect instrument with a resolution not limited by the wavelength of light. We also show how to modify the f...

Negative refraction without negative index in metallic photonic crystals.

It is shown that certain metallic photonic crystals can enable negative refraction and subwavelength imaging without relying on a negative effective index. These metallic structures are very simple in design and appear straightforward for fabrication. Their unusual electromagnetic response should provide an interesting comparison with the metallic left-handed materials.

All-angle negative refraction without negative effective index

Negative refraction of electromagnetic waves in ‘‘lefthanded materials’’ has become of interest recently because it is the foundation for a variety of novel phenomena. In particular, it has been suggested that negative refraction leads to a superlensing effect that can potentially overcome the diffraction limit inherent in conventional lenses. These phenomena have been described in the context ...

Refraction in media with a negative refractive index.

We show that an electromagnetic (EM) wave undergoes negative refraction at the interface between a positive and negative refractive index material, the latter being a properly chosen photonic crystal. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations are used to study the time evolution of an EM wave as it hits the interface. The wave is trapped temporarily at the interface, reorganizes, and, af...
